More than 5.5 million workers all over world are potentially exposed to different kinds of hazardous drugs. They may be exposed to a drug throughout its life cycle which includes its manufacture, transport and distribution, use in health care or home care settings and waste disposal. These workers include shipping and receiving personnel, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, nursing personnel, physicians, operating room personnel, environmental services personnel, research laboratory personnel, and workers in veterinary practices where these drugs are used. With the use of antineoplastic drugs expanding into other specialties, the number of workers who are not properly trained in their safe handling has increased over the past few years.
There are so many evidences related to occupational exposure in health care workers. Medical staffs that prepare and administer hazardous drugs have higher indications of mutagenic substances in their urine compared with non-exposed workers. This evidence is supported by numerous studies examining urine mutagenicity, chromosomal aberrations, sister chromatid exchanges, and other endpoints in studies of pharmacists and nurses who handle these drugs.
Surveys have associated workplace exposures to hazardous substances with minor health effects such as hair loss, headaches, irritation, hypersensitivity, as well as adverse reproductive outcomes including infertility, spontaneous abortions, and congenital malformations and abnormalities. A recent study documented learning disabilities in the children of nurses who had handled antineoplastic drugs during the course of their employment. Reports have addressed a correlation between cancer occurrence and healthcare workers’ exposed to these drugs. A significantly increased risk of leukemia has been also reported among oncology nurses.

After a serious car accident in Ontario and many other jurisdictions, you may be entitled to housekeeping and / or attendant care. Often the insurance company will send in their own assessor to determine what is the appropriate amount of your benefit.
In the past few months, we have seen an increased number of insurance company in-home assessments which significantly undervalue the time allotted for our clients’ housekeeping and attendant care needs.
When this happens, it often creates financial hardship for the client and family. While we are often able to solve the problem, it cannot be solved instantly. For example, in Ontario, with the current backlog for mediations at the Financial Services Commission, it can be 6 months or more before your case is dealt with. Meanwhile, you are not receiving the benefits you need.
How can you reduce the risk that your time will be undervalued? Here are 5 tips.
1) Before the in-home assessment, identify every housekeeping and home maintenance task you performed before the accident. Brainstorm with family members so that you don’t forget anything. If a task is shared among family members, consider how often you performed the task. No task is too small.
2) Think about how long your housekeeping tasks take. I have asked clients how long it takes them to do laundry and have been amazed by the varied responses. Remember all the elements of a task. For just one load of laundry you have to gather it from around the house, bring it to the laundry room, sort it, pre-treat stains, put the load in the washer, ad the soap set the washer, remove it from the washer, set the dryer, ad the fabric softener, lay out any clothes that don’t go in the dryer, remove the clothes from the dryer, fold the laundry and distribute it in the house. Plus some clothes are ironed. Clients who say laundry takes them “5 minutes” are probably not being accurate. Before the in home assessment, do this type of analysis for all your tasks. It will add up.
3) Don’t assume the assessor is being fair. We have had an assessor ask a client to hold a broom. Based on the fact that the client could hold the broom, the assessor concluded in his report that the client could sweep. If you are asked to mimic a task in a way that does not really reflect the work that task involves SAY SOMETHING. Tell the assessor: “Well I can hold a broom but I can’t swing it back and forth over 500 square feet and then sweep up the dust in a dust pan and carry it to the garbage.”
4) Think about the details of your personal care. Many accident victims forget that they have not washed or styled their hair since the accident or can’t wear a bra after the accident due to shoulder pain. Think about the minute details like fastening buttons, cutting toe nails and donning socks. If you are getting help with these tasks from your family, or are forgoing them, make sure you let the assessor know.
5) Accept all offers of help. If the insurance company assessor suggests certain devices to help you with personal care or housekeeping, gladly accept them. Firstly, these devices will probably assist you regain some independence. Secondly, accepting help sends a clear message that you are interested in your rehabilitation.

Exposure scenarios include inhalation of contaminated air and dust during work with asbestos, during work in the same space as others, working with asbestos on worker’s skin, hair, and clothing, in areas surrounding a mining operation, in areas of the world where construction or other human activity (such as gardening) results in disturbance of natural outcrops of asbestos-bearing rock and in homes and buildings where renovations or demolitions disturb asbestos-containing building materials. Contrary to popular belief, the US has not banned asbestos. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently estimated that at least 10000 people die each year from asbestos-related diseases. Asbestos exposure is linked to asbestosis, lung & gastrointestinal cancers, and an aggressive cancer called mesothelioma. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause permanent and irreversible damage to vital organs. Disease occurs 10 — 50 years after exposure. Between 1900 and the mid 1980s, asbestos was used in over 3000 different products. During the 20th century, more than 30 million tons of asbestos were used in industrial facilities, homes, schools, shipyards, steel mills, power plants and commercial buildings in the United States. Although Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects employees from discrimination based on religion, sex, age, national origin and color at the workplace, the law does provide for certain exceptions to the rule. The Bona Fide Occupational Qualifications rule (BFOQ) allows for the hiring of individuals based on race, sex, age, and national origin if these characteristics are bona fide occupational qualifications.
To meet the criteria for a bona fide occupational qualification, an employer must prove the requirement is necessary to the success of the business, demonstrate its necessity by a verifiable method, and prove that the rational basis for this preference for a certain type of employee is rooted in a substantial belief that anyone outside of the preferred class does not have the proper qualifications. An employer must be able to demonstrate a necessity for a certain type of workers because all others are devoid of certain characteristics necessary for employment success.
Examples of BFOQ’s are mandatory retirement ages for bus drivers and airplane pilots, manufacturers of specific sex clothing advertising for only male or female models, or churches requiring members of its clergy being a certain denomination. However, for positions at a church such as janitors, it would be illegal to discriminate based religious denomination, as religion has no effect on a person’s ability to fulfill the duties of the job. Other examples of bona fide occupation qualifications include the use of models and actors for the purpose of authenticity or genuineness and the requirement of emergency personnel to be bilingual, judged on language competency, not national origin. Employers are also allowed to select employees by asserting a bona fide occupational qualification for safety reasons. Safety BFOQ’s are proven by demonstrating how discrimination meets the goal of public safety and that no better alternatives exist.
Limitations to BFOQ include arbitrary, unproven assumptions. Examples of biases include hiring only women as nurses because women are assumed to be more nurturing and caring, or selecting members of a certain sex or racial group because they are perceived to be more aggressive. Decisions are also prohibited from being made on the grounds of co-worker or customer preference. Choosing to not hire a disable receptionist, based on co-worker preference, would be an example of a discriminatory practice and not a legitimate BFOQ.
