Smile Shutter? Give Me a Break

October 7th, 2010  Tagged

All I want is a cheap digital camera to take traveling with me when I go to Argentina at the start of next year. My sister took a Sony Cybershot camera when she went on holiday and the photos she produced were brilliant, so clean and colourful. I can’t afford anything that expensive so I have been trying to scour internet review sites for more informed opinions. Most of the review sites I come across are crammed with the kind of information that I find completely useless. I don’t know what the hell a smile shutter is and no one ever bothers to elaborate. All I know is that it doesn’t mean that the camera automatically takes a picture when the subject smiles because one could be stupid enough to invent something that ridiculous…could they?

The megapixels, the megapixels and the megapixels are always what you hear people boast about when they get a new camera. After reading as many techie reviews as I could on the net I have learned that unless you’re going to crop your photo into oblivion, then the megapixels really don’t make that much difference to the average photo taker. This is especially relevant for today’s generation who keep most of their photographs on their laptops or just post them on Facebook. Not many people will ever get a big cropped print of their picture and big un-cropped prints apparently look so similar that the human eye can’t tell any real difference, according to a test run by The New York Times tech writer David Pogue.

When I took photography A-level at college we learned how to use SLR (single lens reflex) cameras. I bought a 30 year old SLR from a Kodak shop and learned how to put in and wind up my own film. I really enjoyed the times you would get it right with the photograph after successfully steering it through the developing process. Removing the film in complete darkness so as not to damage the image, putting it in the correct mix of developing liquid and then hanging it up to dry was delicate and time consuming but so worth while for the resulting image at the end. When we were offered a choice between using digital or traditional photography to do our final projects, I chose digital. It was a choice I don’t regret although I do miss the old school romance of the SLR.

I have decided upon trying to find a second hand digital SLR on the internet as I just can’t be bothered with tech shops and assistants raving about the 2.5 - 3.5 steps anti-shake performance and dual anti dust systems. I’m not going to fall for all that salesman nonsense, all I need to know is if it can take a nice picture. Is that really so complicated?

The Apple iPad - Will it Make the Laptop Obsolete?

October 6th, 2010  Tagged ,

Whenever new and revolutionary gadgets enter the market, everyone goes into a mad rush to get a hold. Such was the scene when Apple launched its newest release - the iPad. There’s nothing like being one of the first to have it in your hand. When Apple released the revolutionary iPhone, reservation queues to own one were a mile long.

But just a few days after it was introduced, it was widely reported that the launch was disappointing, to say the least. Of course there would always be a few bugs with a new product, but people expected so much from what was to be the end of foldable laptops.

The iPad has no Flash support, which is a must for most applications nowadays. It also lacks 16:9 support, basic multi-tasking features, SD card slot, USB ports, GPS and high resolution video outputs. The list goes on when you compare it to the traditional laptop, and its 3G functions come on as add-ons costing an extra $130. It is also exclusive to the AT&T network which doesn’t give a user much choice on its connectivity provider.

As expected with new generation releases, the bugs are present. No doubt, Apple will be addressing these issues. The reactions have been quite disappointing that just two days later, a spoof video on how even Adolf Hitler was so irked about the iPad was uploaded onto YouTube. The video seemed to get more raves that the iPad itself.

It’s never wise to run ahead of the others just to be one of the first to own a new generation product. A few months later the bugs will be addressed, and a refined version with all the corrections will be made available. It’s always the same story on everything - new generation computers, elliptical and home gym equipments, audio devices, etc.

Spending a good chunk of money to be ahead can sometimes get you to bite your elbow. Patience is a virtue, and it always pays off. For now, you might be better off sticking to your old laptop or notebook. Let them rework the bugs first so you can be sure you’ll get your money’s worth.

Looking For a DVD VHS Combo Player

October 5th, 2010  Tagged ,

Most recording devices are eventually replaced with a new, more innovative model and a VHS recorder is no different. Before long, the cassettes will become obsolete, they will deteriorate and the recorders will no longer be manufactured. But with a DVD VHS combo player you will not have to worry about that happening to your precious memories.

The Toshiba DVR670 consistently gets high reviews from experts and users alike. It is very easy to convert VHS tapes to DVD digital recordings with this model. You simple press a button and the player will take care of the rest. You can also do the reverse if you have occasional use for such a process. No DVD VHS combo player (to my knowledge) is capable of copying commercially created content that is protected by copyright encoding and this player is no different. But you can copy content from cable, satellite or broadcast television with a press of one button.

The Sony RDR-VX560 player has excellent playback quality and one touch dubbing of VHS to DVD and that means that there is no reason to be intimated when attempting to transfer your old memories to a DVD - a simple press of a button will do it for you. This device does not have the capability of recording programming from television unless you have a converter box that can be connected to the line input. That being said, you will get great playback quality from the player using it this way as well as for transferring VHS tapes.

Prices for a DVD VHS combo player range from approximately two hundred dollars to approximately three hundred dollars. There are many other models available from manufactures like Panasonic, JVC, Samsung, Philips and Sylvania to name a few. The best thing to do is an online comparison to make certain you are getting all the features that are most important to you.

Star Wars the Force Trainer - Future Technology Toy

October 3rd, 2010  Tagged ,

You would never think it, but the new Star Wars: The Force Trainer toy has some serious science behind it. By connecting an electroencephalogram to the head, this advanced toy can read brain waves and use them to affect the height of a ping pong ball.

Ostensibly a game in which the user practices his Jedi levitation powers by concentrating and causing a ping pong ball to float, the reality is that this unique game uses tools created by neurologists and clinical psychiatrists. An EEG can measure spikes or dips in brain wave activity. By using this feedback, it can be used to tell a small fan to blow harder or softer which causes a ping pong ball to fly. By training yourself to hold a certain brain wave pattern longer, you can float the ball longer and longer.

Using dry sensor technology, the device can determine the differences between the alpha, beta, gamma and delta waves present in your brain. You can control these different brain ’states’ by using your ability to focus and to concentrate. A micro-chip inside it then uses an algorithm to figure out which brain state you are in and then decides how to raise or lower the ball based on that state.

Although it isn’t marketed as an educational toy, the trainer can be used by savvy parents to explain scientific and medical concepts that might otherwise be too difficult for a child to understand. Of course, parents may just want to pick up Star Wars: The Force Trainer for themselves. All science aside, it makes for quite a show piece at parties.

And of course, kids will love it on its own merits as well. The ability to perform what looks and feels like real magic all by themselves is an experience any child will relish. And the toy actually requires practice before kids become good at it, so it won’t become a one day play thing. Kids will spend time learning and increasing their “Jedi Powers” for days, weeks, and months.

The game also features a “real” Jedi training. While learning to increase their concentration abilities, users of the Start War: The Force Trainer will be guided along by Jedi master Yoda. There are multiple difficulty levels, which will help provide some extra longevity to what is otherwise a simple toy.

Of course, adults might be more interested in Star Wars: The Force Trainer than their kids. Star Wars is a timeless movie and most grown ups still harbor secret dreams about criss-crossing the galaxy with a lightsaber. Ringing in at an ESRP of $130, the Star War force trainer isn’t cheap, but it is looking to be one of the hottest toys for the holiday, so don’t miss your chance to own this unique product.

Canon 50d Review - Read Before You Buy

September 30th, 2010  Tagged ,

So you want to buy the Canon 50d digital photography camera.. Join the club.  After taking my first few shots, the terms “Wow!”, “Beautiful!”, and “Amazing!” came up very quickly from me and the people that were with me.  Let’s get right to it.

Note: I also have a great resource that you can get it dirt cheap, check below after you’ve read the review if you want to get hooked up.

Why Buy the Canon 50d?

This 50d has been a giant upgrade from the 40d and 20d.  Canon has really outdone themselves.  The quality is so much more superior to the 50d’s so-called competitors.  The other companies are gonna have to pull something amazing to keep up with this.

It’s a great professional and amateur camera to add versatility

The 50d handles color way better than the predecessors and has an amazing LCD view.  The camera body is solid and comes with an absolutely great lens.  It’s just vastly superior to any competition such as Nikon.  Canon really stands up to their expectations.

Am I better off going with another camera?

No - not for the price.  For the price this is simply an amazing deal.  I personally haven’t seen any camera with the same caliber that is so relatively inexpensive.  This really is a great deal.  Canon’s have always usually had pretty good products for the money, but this surpasses all the other prior Canon deals I’ve come across.  This is a truly professional camera.

Where can I get the best deal on the Canon 50d?

I got mine from a place that was selling them wholesale.  They may still have some left, you can check it out.

Information on HDMI Monitors

September 15th, 2010  Tagged

The last few decades has seen an unprecedented growth and development in the electronics industry. Newer and highly sophisticated gadgets are being introduced in the electronics market every day. TVs and display monitors have also undergone considerable changes and manufacturers are always trying to introduce technology that has improved picture quality and resolution. HDMI monitors are one of these new products. This article aims to introduce the reader to HDMI monitors, what they are and their numerous features and benefits.

HDMI stands for high quality multimedia interface. HDMI monitors are full size flat screen monitors that provide great picture quality to the viewers. They come in two types, mainly the CRT and the LCD technology. CRT stands for cathode ray tube and this technology is found in many TVs and computer monitors. The more popular HDMI technology is LCD, short for Liquid Crystal Display. The LCD high definition monitors offer the same view from all angles, the resolution can be adjusted, and they are lightweight and thus offer greater mobility.

The HDMI monitor is for you if you like watching movies. This type of modern display device by far offers the best viewing quality. Having this monitor means that you have a host of options as the technology supports different audio and video functions. The HDMI technology allows you to use the monitors for a number of audio and video operations. It supports blue ray players and most of the latest game consoles such as Xbox 360. It offers a virtually real experience when playing games due to the high definition picture and the larger size of the screen. This makes it especially popular with children of all ages.

The monitors built on the HDMI technology offer many benefit for the office in addition to being great display devices for home. The high definition image quality is helpful for presentations. Being larger than normal monitors, they also help in video conferencing. The HDMI technology is a common resource in the electronics industry and most of the major electronics manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung, Panasonic to name a few make these monitors and different models are widely available.

The internet is the best place to carry out a research on monitors especially a particular HDMI monitor before making a purchase. Many authorized dealers advertise these monitors online and a comparative analysis of prices should not take you more than half an hour if you do this online.

Choosing The Right Monitor - A Buyers Guide

September 10th, 2010  Tagged , ,

There are several considerations when you plan to purchase a monitor.

Monitor sizes are the dominant feature. Larger monitors are more expensive. Monitors are measured diagonally, though the length isn’t exactly the correct. It is almost always a little shorter in real life than the length shown.

Resolution is the number of pixels displayed. This is normally shown as the number of pixels wide and the number of pixels tall the screen displays. The larger the numbers, the sharper the image displayed on the screen. Normally, a monitor will be able to display a range of resolutions with more pixels resulting in a slower refresh rate.

Another big concern is LCD or CRT. LCD refers to Liquid Crystal Displays, and these are flat screens. CRT refers to Cathode Ray Tubes, and these are the classic television shaped monitors. LCD monitors produce less eyestrain typically, and have no distortion since every pixel is the same size and shape. This isn’t true for the CRT monitor, due to the shape of the glass screen. LCD monitors are flat, and thus take less space on the desktop. They last longer and consume less electricity. CRT monitors are able to change display resolutions over a larger range and still keep a sharp image. CRT monitors can also reach higher refresh rates with potentially noticeable results for games and multimedia. If the computer will be the only light in the room, the LCD should be better, while the CRT will work well when more than one person is likely to be viewing the screen at once.

For LCD monitors, the contrast ratio is a measure of how easy it is to tell colours apart. Higher is better. Luminescence is a measure of the light given off by the screen. For most uses 200-250 nits is ideal, but for those who watch movies or television on their monitors, 500 nits is better. Response time is a measure of how quickly the monitors are able to refresh their image. 16 milliseconds is normally sufficient, but a gaming machine should be more like 5 ms. Typically an LCD monitor will be harder to view from an angle, and this is measured in degrees from directly in front of the screen. Some come with glass screens to protect the LCD display from damage. TFT is Thin Film Transistor and uses transistor technology to improve the image. These TFT displays are a type of LCD display.

For CRT monitors, refresh rate is one of the most important considerations. This is the rate at which the screen redraws the images. Rates below 70 MHz often cause eyestrain. 75 MHz is the industry standard to avoid this issue. Dot pitch is a measure of the spaces between the pixels. Smaller pitch is better, and 0.22 mm to 0.26 mm is the range best suited for normal use.

Another consideration is whether or not to use integral speakers. Dedicated speakers can be more powerful and higher quality than those normally built into monitors, and can be placed to maximize effectiveness. They also take up precious desk space, and unless the sound quality is important, the usual result is to rely on the speakers on the monitor.

Now that you have the basics on choosing your next or first monitor, you might want to check out some of these top manufacturers XEROX or HANNS G
