Pendant Lighting

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Pendant lighting fixtures are an attractive way to add more light for specific tasks and activities as well as to enhance the aesthetic of any room decor. They are generally mounted to a ceiling, wall or column and suspended at a specific length for the desired look and function. Many restaurants feature a pendant fixture over each table to create an intimate ambiance, as though each table is a dining room in and of itself. Pendants are a popular choice in homes for breakfast bars, game tables and kitchen counters, and many are equipped with dimmer switches for light control.
Unlike a chandelier which has multiple bulbs, pendant light fixtures generally have only one, or like a billiard table pendant, have single bulbs well spaced versus a cluster chandelier. They can provide a great deal of general lighting, but their strength is in their ability to provide light to a smaller, more defined area suited for specific activities or decorative displays. As in the case with restaurants, a properly placed pendant light eliminates the need for a table lamp which saves space while adding dimension and allure. Pendant lighting, says one top American interior designer, are fashion statements.
Pendant lighting is available in a wide range of sizes and styles from standard polished brass to elegant Tiffany-inspired glass fixtures. The type of bulb and overall brightness depends on the space. For example, a pendant light in a dining nook should not be too bright. The look and feel should be warm and cozy. The light over a billiards table, however, should be bright and stimulating. For a softer look and feel, use an incandescent bulb with a lower voltage. For a brighter look, use halogen or fluorescent bulbs. Again, dimmer switches dramatically increase the functionality of pendant fixtures.
Interior designers are quick to recommend pendant lighting to their clients because they see them as a fairly inexpensive way to transform the look of a room and truly set the tone of the decor, from traditional to eclectic. They are being installed in elegant dining rooms and casual breakfast nooks as well as boisterously active basements. They not only provide focused light but also create focal points of the room. The most popular pendant fixtures on the market today are smaller ones with colored and multi-colored glass. Other models are made of metal or ceramic of all colors and shapes.

Light | Comment (0)Security Lighting

Image : http://www.flickr.com
There are two things intruders don’t like - loud noise and bright light.
The former makes it difficult for them to hear approaching people, and makes a compelling case for the fitting of internal sirens (sound bombs) in alarm systems. This however is a topic for another day.
The latter means they can be easily seen and is possibly the most effective deterrent. Security lighting can be used in conjunction with CCTV to give better pictures.
Security lighting can be used inside and out, and everything said here applies to either. Remember though, that outside lights must be rated for outdoor use, although there is nothing to stop you using them indoors as well.
Many premises leave lights on all night. If you do this make sure that low energy lighting, such as fluorescent or sodium lighting is used, otherwise there will be large electricity consumption.
PIR Switched Lighting
A PIR or passive infra red detector, switches on when body heat movement is detected. Thus it will detect humans, but also animals such as cats upwards. The most popular form of security lighting has a built in PIR, which switches on the light if some-one approaches after dark. PIRs can commonly be adjusted for 3 things - the light level at which they start working, the time for which they remain on (typically 20 seconds to 10 minutes) and sometimes the sensitivity or range over which they work (typically 4 to 12 metres). They are usually physically adjustable, so that they can be pointed more downwards, to reduce the range, and sideways to give cover over particular areas. They are more sensitive when the person approaches across their detection area, than straight towards them.
When choosing a location, they should be at least 2.5m above ground, so they are not easily tampered with, well away from any heat source, such as a central heating exhaust and their detection area should not include a road at the end of the property.
Many PIRs have an over-ride facility, so that the light can be switched on for up to 8 hours continuously.
Halogen floodlights, ranging from 150 to 500 or sometimes 1000W, are the most common security lights using PIRs, but other types of light fittings are also available.
Low energy bulbs are best avoided, because some do not last long and may reduce the life of the PIR, and they don’t reach full brightness immediately, which is desirable in a security light.
Floodlights can cause annoyance to neighbours, if they shine onto their property, especially through windows, so their sighting and adjustment should bear this in mind. They can usually be adjusted independently of the PIR to keep them pointing down away from other peoples’ property.
PIR lights should be wired in via a switched fused spur, so that they can be isolated for maintenance, such as changing a bulb.
Dusk to Dawn Lighting
Instead of a PIR, these lights usually have a built in photocell, which switches them on at dusk and they stay on all night until dawn. Because they are on for long periods, most use low energy bulbs. These do not give as powerful lighting as floodlights. Some low energy bulbs have a built in photcell, so they can be put into any fitting that is big enough to take them. If you use these, make sure the photocell is exposed to the light and not obscured by the light fitting, otherwise it will come on during the day.
Ordinary Light Fittings Switched Externally
These include floodlamps without PIRs, and any other form of lighting.
There are various ways these can be switched to turn them into security lights.
1. Using an ordinary light switch to turn them on manually. May be useful for convenience light, but useless if you are not there to turn them on.
2. Using an external PIR. Stand alone PIRs can be used to switch on the light. There will have to be wiring going from light to PIR. This is useful if the light is best sited away from the detection area. Everything said above about PIRs applies here. External PIRs are often better than built in ones. Some have a 360degree detection area, although only a maximum of 180deg. is needed if it is mounted on a wall.
3. Using an external photocell.
4. Using a time switch. The easiest way is to use a plug-in timer. These are both cheap and easy to use. The light is fitted to mains plug, which plugs into the timer. This can be adjusted for the light to go on and off whatever the timer is set to. If the light is outside, the timer must either be inside, or in a waterproof socket box outside.
5. Using a random switching bulb holder. This is mainly used for inside use, and gives outsders the impression that some-one is in the house switching lights.
6. Using a remote key fob. The radio contolled floodlight is switched on remotely using a small key fob transmitter. This can be kept on a key ring and operated from a car, or from, say, a bedroom, to switch on an external floodlight.

Light | Comment (0)Bathroom Lighting Tips

Image : http://www.flickr.com
So, you’ve been putting up with the tacky light fixtures that were installed when you moved in. Or worse yet, maybe you still have the bulb and string hanging from your bathroom ceiling. But more and more people often, the bathroom is used as a sanctuary, a place to relax after a long day. Steam showers, Jacuzzis, and more spacious rooms are partly the reason. Whats ofter overlooked is the lighting, which can make all the difference when it comes to aesthetics and utility. The secret to good bathroom lighting is layering the light. Layering, refers to using different sources of light. In the bathroom, it involves using both general lighting and task lighting.
The first Layer
The fist layer, as mentioned, starts with ambient or general lighting. The goal is to provide a warm glow to the room by providing a comfortable level of brightness without any glare. The most common sources of general light for the bathroom is a flush or semi-flush ceiling fixture. It is also becoming more common to use a mini-chandeliers in the bathroom. Ambient lights need to be placed in the center of the bathroom so that the light is spread out evenly.
How much general light do I need for my bathroom?
The rule of thumb for the first layer of lighting in the bathroom is as follows. Multiply the length and width of the bathroom- lets say 10ft. by 10ft. Take that number and multiply it by a factor of 1.5. So in the example above, you would need 150 Watts of general light as your fist layer.
The Second Layer
The second layer is task lighting. Portable lamps, tracks, and recessed lights are usually the sources of task lighting. However, these sources don’t work well at all in the bathroom. If you have a recessed light above the vanity mirror you’ve probably notices the shadow it casts on your face. It is not suitable at all.
Placement of bathroom sconces and bath-bars
Proper task lighting in your bathroom should surround you with light. The ideal source of task lighting would be two sconces on either side of the vanity and a bath-bar above the mirror. Sconces should be place about 6-8 inches above eye level or about 6 1/2 feet from the ground. They should also be separated by a distance of 28 inches or more. The bath-bar should be 30-32 inches in length, mounted above the mirror. FYI, many companies now offer “beauty wraps.” These fixtures wrap around your mirror, providing you with sufficient light.
How do I determine the amount of task lighting in my bathroom?
Calculating the amount of task lighting is similar to the example given above. The only difference is you multiple by a factor of 2.5. In the example given above, that would amount to 250 Watts of light.

Lights Sanfte Electro-Klänge von atemberaubender Schönheit! - Thomas Berger -
Egal ob “Guns And Horses”, “Starry Eyed”, “This Love”,
“Wish I Stayed” oder “Your Biggest Mistake”, man kommt
2. Starry Eyed
4. Under The Sheets
5. The Writer
und
Einfach Hammer! Sagt mehr als 1000 Worte!
Goulding - go for Gold - Manfred Draga - Köln

Light | Comment (0)Healing With Laser Light Therapy

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Using laser light therapy nowadays, affords us a safe and painless treatment and is practiced to a great extent assisting us to induce healing, while simultaneously offering a safe pain reliever for an extensive variety of problems. A lot of medical doctors are including this up-to-date alternative treatment–therapeutic laser light therapy-in varied developments of visible red light, magnetic field, infrared, and super pulsed laser. In the process, photons are taken to particular targeted regions of the body for various reasons in order to alleviate pain and swelling. The laser light therapy is supplied by a lower-power laser or a light emitting diode, or LED.
The first actual commercial lower-power laser that was appropriate for dealing with human pain was obtainable in the late 1970s. Since then, it has been widely utilized and recognized in Europe by the medical field. When it received FDA approval in 2001, it became extremely popular in the United States. At that time, the FDA had cleared laser light therapy for speed healing and temporary relief of muscle and joint pain, arthritis, muscle stiffness, and increased circulation.
With problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, a low level of laser light therapy has exhibited significant improvement in over 60% of patients. Light treatments of such medical conditions at specific wavelengths, at low intensity level, has been providing beneficial results around the world. It is wonderful for these sufferers to have access to a new non-invasive therapy before looking at surgery.
With so many medical professionals expanding their medical field with alternative health products such as laser light therapy, more and more patients are seeking out those who know how to apply this latest technology to assist them in their searches. Numerous advantages are that it requires a short treatment time, ability to handle specific conditions, less side effects, and more conditions that can be treated than ever before-fibromyalgia, ligament sprains, muscle strains, arthritis, and many other disorders.
The best advantage of laser light therapy is that it can be used in combination with other therapy forms. Some of these include physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments, massages, soft tissue mobilization, electrotherapy, and immediately following surgery. Alternately, there are many other healing modalities that are considered as complementary forms that can be used with laser light therapy, in order to highly increase the effectiveness of the treatments.
The Low Laser Therapy (LLT) for hair loss is claimed to work by supplying energy to the body in the form of non-thermal photons of light. The technology is further claimed that in the right application, the body is able to absorb this external energy on a cellular level and transform light energy into chemical energy, which the body then uses to accelerate the normal healing rate of tissue for a wide range of ailments. .
Although studies prove these photochemical actions and reactions, you can’t see it happen, however you would notice how it has the ability to help in conditions where all previous therapies have failed.

Light | Comment (0)Light Requirements For The Home Garden

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Leaves must have Light
Leaves are the plants’ food factories, and light is the power that helps them manufacture food from elements of air and soil. Most plants need many hours of sunshine daily in order to grow satisfactorily. Roses, for instance, need at least six hours. Some plants, however, get along with little light, so they can grow in shade or semishade.
A good general rule to remember is that ordinarily the more sun a plant gets, the better it will flower.
Morning sunlight is kind light, bright but relatively cool; thus the east side of your house is a favored position for plants.
Afternoon sunshine is hot and harsh, so a western exposure is less versatile.
Sun touching and warming the soil is desirable in early spring, to start plants into growth. And it’s good all year in cool climates. But in hot-summer areas, it can dry the earth and overheat roots, so plants often require part-time shade, or being close enough together to shade the ground, or having a protective carpet of groundcover plants.
Light
Light affects plant life in many ways. The scientific name for the process by which green plants use light energy to synthesize carbohydrates (foods) from carbon dioxide and water is “photosynthesis,” from the Greek words photos, meaning light, and synthesis, meaning putting together.
Light supplies the energy needed to transform carbon dioxide absorbed from the air, water, and certain inorganic minerals into organic matter and into the oxygen, which the plants give off as long as light is present. Where light is absent, photosynthesis stops, and the plants absorb oxygen and give off carbon dioxide.
Research has resulted in the classification of plants according to their day-length characteristics. One group, “short-day plants,” flowers when days are short and nights are long. “Long-day plants” flower when days are long and nights are short. Still others are unaffected by day lengths and are called “light neutral” or “indifferent.”
The following list includes common flower and vegetable plants according to their light requirements.
Short-day plants (10 to 12 light hours)
Asparagus
Aster
Beans
Carrot
Chrysanthemum
Corn
Dahlia
Gardenia
Poinsettia
Potato (tuber development)
Strawberry geranium
Sweet potato
Long-day plants ( 14 to 18 light hours)
Most annuals
Beet
Chicory
Chinese cabbage
Dill
Grains
Hibiscus
Onion
Pea
Radish
Spinach
Tuberous begonia
Indifferent plants
African violets
Kale
Kohlrabi
Broccoli
Lettuce
Brussels sprouts
Marigold
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Spinach
Celery
Okra
Coleus
Pepper
Collard
Rose
Cress
Semperflorens begonia
Cucurbits
Endive
Tomato
Geranium
Turnip
Regulating Light in the Garden
Outdoor gardeners can improve their results by increasing the amount and the consecutive hours of light their plants get. A white mulch (such as light stones), a white painted building or fence or strips of aluminum foil placed in the garden will reflect more light energy onto plants, spurring them to greater growth. Fruit growers can prune out the center of their trees to increase flower bud formation by getting more light to the center of their trees.
Light also affects the germination of seed. Some seed germinate more readily when exposed to light than when buried in the earth. Grasses, lettuce, celery, snapdragon, petunia, and flowering tobacco will all be more successful if seed are merely pressed down or gently watered down into the growing medium.

Light | Comment (0)Upright Vacuum Cleaners - Light Yet Mighty

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Let’s face it, everyone needs a vacuum cleaner, they are absolutely necessary appliances. They not only pick up all the dirt, crumbs and debris from a carpeted area, there are all sorts of nifty attachments that can clean all sorts of surfaces including linoleum, hardwood floors, and upholstery. These new upright vacuum cleaners available today are not only lightweight, they boast strong suction powers, and amazing versatility. They don’t have to deal with issues that former old clunky models presented, such as bulky and cumbersome vacuum bags, hard to push heavy machines, and poor suction abilities. Thanks to the sleek and easy new vacuum technology of lightweight upright vacuum cleaners, these issue are a thing of the past.
The History of Convenience
The history of the upright vacuum cleaner is actually a lot more fascinating than it may seem. The whole vacuuming process that takes place inside of an upright vacuum cleaner involves a changing in air pressure caused by a pump that is reducing the air pressure inside a tube. The surrounding atmospheric pressure then pushes air through the carpet into the tube, sucking up all the dirt and debris with it. This is the central idea behind the technology that is used in all vacuums, including upright vacuum cleaners. The very first machine to utilize this technology was the Whirlwind, back in 1868 by Ives W. McGaffney. This invention helped revolutionize cleaning potential all over the world.
Commercial upright vacuum cleaners have gone through all sorts of changes since 1868. When vacuum cleaners were first introduced, they were extremely expensive, with most costly a third of the price of a car. As the technology became more cost effective to make and more companies entered the market, vacuum cleaners became a staple of every middle class home. Door-to-door salesmen and their convincing demonstrations to housewives everywhere helped facilitate the growing popularity of vacuum cleaners until now you won’t find a home without one.
Upright vacuum cleaners have a cleaning head and a bag, or now a plastic refuse container, that catches all the dirt sucked from a surface. There are many kinds of attachments that make cleaning difficult surfaces or hard to reach spots extremely easy. The suction action is redirected to the attachment and can offer the same power as moving the unit across the floor.
Cheaper and Better
Over the past 15 years, upright vacuum cleaners have gotten significantly cheaper and better at the same time. Over time vacuum cleaners have gone from their past as an awkward and noisy yet compelling new technology to being a quiet, easy, affordable and powerful convenience. Upright vacuum cleaners have gone from costing a large fraction of the price of a car to costing as little of a moderately expensive meal for two. Also, we no longer have to rely on the biased opinion of door-to-door salesmen to make our purchasing decisions. We can now search any of the many upright vacuum cleaners review sites available online to read comparisons by real customers. Thanks to the internet, we no longer have take a chance on an unknown product.
